We all want others to feel like they can trust us and have confidence in us. I am always teaching people to surround themselves with quality people. I express not to focus on the number of people they have in their life, but the quality of people. I personally have a lot of people in my life that I consider to be acquaintances. However, in order for people to be in my inner, trusted circle, there are things that I need to see in them. The reality is, sometimes gaining major trust and confidence in people will take time! But once you are in someone’s circle of trust, they will have the utmost confidence in you! So do you want to be that ‘quality’ person, the one that people want in their inner circle? Do these things and you are well on your way!
10 Ways That Others Will Gain Trust and Confidence In You
- Lead by example – Stand up and stand out and do what is right in life. All the time.
- Be there for people through the good and challenging times – Be that person that is there for people through all the times in life, not just the good times.
- Don’t just say you’ll do something. Show them – Be a person that walks the talk.
- Listen – Take the time to not only hear what people are saying, but go deeper and really listen and get the message behind what is said.
- Give to Others – Look out for what others need. Give to others. Pay it forward.
- Communicate – Be respectful to others and be a great communicator.
- Inspiring / Enthusiastic – People appreciate others that are motivational and have a positive drive for life.
- Act consistently – Be consistent with others. People appreciate knowing they can rely on you and are consistent with their behavior with them.
- Show integrity – Honesty in life goes a long way with people in life.
- Go the extra step in life – Instead of just being there for someone, go the extra mile for people. Go above and beyond what’s expected of you!
Which of the above are the most important characteristics you want to see with the quality people in your life? What other characteristics are important to you? I can’t wait to hear from you!

You’ve Always Inspired me right from Day One, you have a very beautiful Spirit, easy going and always willing to help, find ways to support, Encourage and inspire young ladies and everyone to succeed, I hardly meet people with these Qualities, you are a rare Gem Cynthia. It is hard for people to be there for you in challenging times, even when they understand your predicament, even when they are aware of your struggles. You’ve solely inspired me. A lady asked me last week ” How come you’ve always maintained a positive mindset. Even in a very difficult situation? I told her I am surrounded by lovely, and wonderful women, I learn from them and I echo hi these qualities because someone will need them on the long run. I apply your theories in my daily living and I remember you always for your work and support. Sometimes I ask myself. How does she do it always? You are truly a blessing to Millions to people including me. Love you big Cynthia.. More grace to your achievements. 🙂
Thank you so much Etie for your beautiful comments. You are such a positive spirit. You shine brightly every day! Keep that positivity going my friend. You are a superstar!
Another great post Cynthia. It is funny how life works. I used to have many “acquaintances”. It took me a while to realize that many of these people were not quality at all and were dragging me down. I now have a much smaller group of acquaintances that are definitely full of quality and that lift me up daily (you are one of those!). I in turn try to lift them up and inspire them as well.
While I like the entire list above, the ones that jump out at me are: Listen, Give to Others, Inspiring/Enthusiastic, and Show Integrity.
Keep up the amazing work my friend!
~Adam
Thank you Adam for your great thoughts! It is so important to focus all of our energy to those people that lift us up! Inspire us! Positivity challenge us to be our BEST! Keep doing what you are doing Adam!
Great post Cynthia. You were one of the first people who I connected with on Twitter two years ago. From day one you have walked the talk of every single one of your tips. I know you have inspired and motivated not just me, but countless others. Personally, over the last few years I’ve distanced myself from negative people. It has been one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. I try and live by each and every one of those tips. When I fall short I make sure to do better! Great post.
Thank you so much Terri for your comments. We’ve been connected for a long time now! I appreciate everything you are about. I am so glad you have distanced yourself from negative people. You deserve the absolute BEST!
#2 is right on. Being there for the GOOD and the BAD. This is how I know my real friends from acquaintances. Who showed up when I needed them most? My real friends!
No doubt Stephanie! The real quality people in life will be there for you ALL the time! Thanks for your comments! I appreciate you!
Cynthia, great post and. All 10 are so true.
Would have to day #5 is my favorite.
I think it is important to Support ~ Encourage and Promote others!
Often, we do a better job as too many times they don’t see the incredible value they bring.
We can brag on them with “Intensity”!!
Hugs Debbie
Thank you so much Debbie for your comments. When I think of someone that goes the extra mile, I absolutely think of you! You are EXTRAORDINARY! Love your attitude! Thank you for everything!
Great stuff Cyn. I feel like I do some of those things already. Makes me feel good to know that!
Colleen, thanks so much for the shout out! Keep doing what you are doing! You are extraordinary!
Great post Cynthia! I believe every point is important and I try my best every day to do just that. You are an excellent mentor and role model, a huge inspiration to many and I’m blessed to have you as my friend. You are all of these beautiful qualities and then some!!! Thank you for all that you do!
Thank you SO much Linda for YOUR inspiration! You are an amazing woman and I appreciate you!!
Another great post Cynthia, thanks for sharing!
I know that many people will have great things to say, and will say them far more eloquently than I so instead, i wanted to play back a short story.
As my trusted circle know (and all your readers now!), my kid sister is battling cancer and faces a pretty grim future. Anyway, she decided that she couldn’t take the journey on her own and so she looked to her trusted inner circle and thought about what they meant to her.
All the usual platitudes came up – loyal, honest, sharing…etc.
But something jumped out at me when she spoke about this – the people that she carries with her, the ones that are holding her up – are those that are willing to put themselves in her shoes and think about things from her context.
Sometimes she wants to talk, sometimes she wants to rest peacefully, sometimes she wants to get drunk and sing loudly in front of the TV, sometimes she wants to sleep all day. The point is, her inner circle understand and accept this because they take the time to think about what she is feeling at that moment.
I love that idea – that to gain the trust and respect of our teams, we need to be willing to step outside of ourselves, to put our own needs aside and place ourselves in the other person’s shoes.
Thanks again!
Wow Tony! I don’t think I could have written something more perfectly. What a great reminder that we need to try to put ourselves in the other person’s shoes before we react. I appreciate you sharing what you did…. Much gratitude to you.. I appreciate YOU!
Great article, Cynthia! Spot on…as usual!
Number one is my favorite: “Lead by example – Stand up and stand out and do what is right in life. All the time.”
We look to our leaders to show us the way by living out their words. It’s impossible to have confidence in someone if they say one thing and then do another…
Thank you so much LaRae for your comments on my blog. I agree with you that leaders show us the way how they act each day! Have an extraordinary day. Appreciate your thoughts and wisdom!
Hello Cynthia,
I LOVE all 10 of your points, but Integrity, Listening and Leading by Example stick out for me. Earlier this week I was reading an excerpt from Angeles Arrien’s book titled “The Four Fold Way”. In it she highlights four keys as they apply to business leadership: 1) Show Up (both physically & mentally); 2) Honor Your Heart; 3) Speak Your Truth without Blame or Judgment; and 4) Stay Open, not Attached to Outcomes.
I agree with you that in order for us to be good leaders and just good people, we need to develop the confidence & trust that others have in us. Once that is done, miraculous things can happen to change lives and situations in a positive way!
Have a great day!
Dale
Thank you so much Dale for your feedback. It is so much appreciated! I am going to have to check out that book you made the 4 points from. Sounds fantastic. Thank you again for your wisdom!
Love them all Cindy, but #5 speaks to me the most because I consider it my “gift.” I enjoy giving. Whether it be a small financial donation or something simple as a card, I take pleasure in making those important to me happy. I have found out through giving that something that seems small in nature to you may be viewed as something much larger to the person you are giving. You never know what effect you may have on person by making a simple gesture.
Thank you Geoff for your comments. You are so correct my friend about giving to others. It may seem like a very small gesture to us, but to the other person, you might have just changed their entire day, week or life around. You lead the way Geoff and I am honored to know you.
Great article and great advice! This would make a great presentation ~ you’ve got all the goods Cynthia. Some people have to choose what is important for them to always show up for and prioritize. So be careful how many inner circles you try to take on ~ but if you are going into an inner circle you need to have these 10 qualities! Perfectly worded Cynthia!
Thank you SO much Sage for your beautiful words. I greatly appreciate your feedback. THANK YOU!
Another spot on blog.
Everything Cynthia has highlighted here makes sense.
She never gets it wrong either on her blogs or on twitter.
Be a shining example like her and lead from the front ‘Gain Trust and Confidence’ show that you care!!
Cynthia thanks for your never ending inspiration!!
Aubrey, thank you so much for your awesome comments. YOU are appreciated! Thank you!!
Thank you Cynthia for all your hard work, motivation, and inspiration you give to us all! All of these ways hit home for me as I’ve strived to be a trustworthy confident person who listens, cares, and gives! However, I have not had people in my life that return any of these qualities and I’m still so waiting for quality people to show up in my life. You and all your SmartChics are the most quality trusted people I’ve ever known and can only wish to meet one day! For you I am forever grateful! Many Thanks and Big Hugs to you Cynthia! You’re a Great Mentor! ❤️
Jeanne, thank you so much for sharing your thoughts on this article I have written. The SmartChic Community is always here for you. I am here for you. Always remember to believe in yourself, trust your gut and take care of YOU!
Fantastic post Cynthia! It’s hard to pick out any one of the traits that stands out more than any of the others, since each one is an important facet to have. You’ve touched on the most important qualities a person needs to possess and look for in other people. I would add one final one, if it were my list, and that would be genuineness. It either radiates from a person or doesn’t and is something that can be felt intuitively. I agree that a handful of trusted friends and confidants is worth a busload of those that don’t have those qualities.
Excellent thoughts Debbie and I absolutely LOVE that you add ‘genuineness’. You are so correct that you need to feel that genuineness from someone in order to feel confident and have trust in them!
This is a terrific list. I’ve been noticing a lot of going the extra mile lately and it really strengthens relationships quickly. I’m always so impressed when people do more than they need to or more than is asked of them.
All these attributes are examples of leading by true character. One’s qualities stand the test of time with consistency . . . that is the defining difference between charisma and character. Someone may charm you, but it takes dependability of constant and repetitive actions to show that you ‘walk your talk.’ Like you, I know many individuals. However, with that said, someone I call ‘my friend’ makes themselves available, always dependable and trustworthy.
To add to your eloquent blog . . . learned from my husband and soul mate, Twitter Expert, Life & Business Coach, Gary Loper . . . we must love by the ‘platinum rule’ not the ‘golden rule’. Love people by how they want to be loved. Ultimately listen to their Love Language!
Wonderful article! You are always integrious, positive and upbeat, giving and inspiring, truly a motivational speaker!
Another great post Cynthia!! You never failed to mentor, motivate and inspire! Every day I am reminded by your posts to keep moving forward, to dream and never give up. Thank you!!
You definitely lead by example.
I believe all ten are equally important. By following them we ensure to cultivate strong long-lasting relationships that will uplift us and encourage us to become better human beings everyday…
