We live in amazing times as far as the ability to receive and learn information. We obviously have the internet at our fingertips; on our laptops, tablets and phones. With a quick search, we’ve got pretty much all the information we ever need. And for those of us that are looking to get out there broadcasting, there are amazing apps such as Periscope and Facebook Live that provide us international exposure in a matter of seconds by hitting the broadcast button. But even though we are in the best of times with information, it’s also the worst of times as far as the amount of distractions and noise we have on a daily basis. When people come to me for laser focused mentoring, one of the first things that is often said to me is that they are very distracted, and they are not as productive as they would like to be.
Before I assist my clients to move forward on their goals, we take a look at the different types of noise in their life and we do everything we can to eliminate those things. So I have come up with 4 types of noise that are typically around us. I’ll be interested in hearing your thoughts about these types of noise.
4 Types of Noise to Reduce to Achieve More Happiness
- Social Media Noise– Probably one of the most distracting types of noise for people these days is the ‘social media noise’. The emails, the text messages and the notifications for live streaming can be so tempting to check throughout the day. But the problem with this is that it prevents you from getting done what you need to get done for your daily goals. In addition, by having so much input each day, it can be overwhelming and you can get conflicting messages for what you really need for information. To reduce social media noise, I suggest a few things. First, turn off notifications when you are working on important projects. Secondly, time block when you will do social media. Ideally, block out a period of time when you will reply to your emails and text messages. Not every email or text message is an emergency. I know that it’ll be hard to get into this practice if you’re so used to replying to people right away. And I know that it’ll be tough not to jump on that live broadcast that you love so much. But remember that replays are available. Use social media as a
reward for getting your work done.
- People Noise– What is people noise? It can family, friends or the people that you work with. When I describe ‘people noise’ to my clients, I often describe them as the people in your life that have known you for a while and have strong opinions about what you are doing in life. Do you have those people in your life? When you are looking to make a decision, they are either offering their opinion or making their judgments known which ends up being overwhelming to you. The people noise in your life doesn’t calm you, but rather confuses you in what you need to do. When this type of noise needs to be reduced or eliminated in your life, I suggest you create boundaries on what you will allow in. Meaning this; it’s okay to listen to what people have to say, but don’t let it distract you from what you know is right. The right decision for your life.
- Inner Critic Noise – Do you tend to be your toughest inner critic? I do find this so much with myself and others that I mentor. That we are too hard on ourselves. At times we think we are not good enough or smart enough to handle something. We all know it’s wrong to think like this, yet it’s a challenge for so many people. In order to reduce or eliminate the inner critic noise, we must first realize that absolutely no one is perfect. When we realize that everyone makes mistakes and that no one is perfect, sometimes it will help in taking more action in life. Another way to help with this is to have a great mentor or accountability partner that positively pushes you to take action in your life.
- Success Noise – There is so much pressure out there to be successful in life. Of course we all want great success! The success noise I am speaking of are the messages that you are receiving that try to convince you what your definition of success should be. In order for us to live our happiest life, we must reduce this noise! Success must be defined by what makes you happy in life. And how do you do that? Well it can often be done on your own, by taking some time for yourself and digging deep about what you really want in life. But if you are having a hard time with that, I suggest you seek out a great mentor or coach to help you with this. When you reduce the noise of the messages of what success is and figure it out for yourself, you will live your happiest life.
